Okay, so Christmas hasn’t even happened yet so this might be a bit previous, but forewarned is forearmed and all that. Received from Manchester City Council, information on how to make sure your used Christmas tree ends up as useful mulch rather than a spikey hazard in the back yard…
The Christmas tree recycling scheme will be running again at the start of January. There are several ways that residents can recycle their trees this year – depending on the services they have – including collections at parks, kerbside collections with green bins or kerbside collections with the food only caddy.
All the information for residents about this scheme is available on the Manchester City Council website here.
Kerbit Green & Food
This year Christmas tree collections are even easier. Just like last year, residents on the kerbit green bin service can leave their Christmas tree out next to their green bin on their collection dates in January to be recycled. However, this year all residents that have the food only recycling service will also be able to put their tree out during January on their collection day with their external caddy. We have advised residents to be careful not to block pavements with their trees when putting them out.
Collection dates: Monday 3 – Sunday 9 January 2011, 9.30am – 3.30pm. Trees will also be collected at 8 parks across the City, where the trees are chipped on site and the chippings used by the parks. Trees can be taken to:
Alexandra Park (Moss Side/Whalley Range)
Collection point will be at the Russell Street entrance to the park (North East side of the park, alongside Princess Road) adjacent to the Park Manager’s office buildings on the right hand side as you enter through the gates.
Chorlton Water Park (Chorlton)
Collections in the main car park off Maitland Avenue (off Barlow Moor Road).
Fog Lane Park (Didsbury)
Collections will be in the area adjacent to the park offices – the entrance is on Fog Lane, towards Parrs Wood Road.
Platt Fields (Fallowfield/Rusholme)
Collections will be in the car park, which is signposted from Mabfield Road entrance (off Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield at the South East corner of the park). The collection point will be located in the far left hand corner of the car park as you enter through the gate.
This year we will also be collecting from: Hulme Community Garden Centre – collection point near the side entrance, just off Rolls Crescent in Hulme.
What happens to your tree?
Trees collected at the parks/special collection points will be chipped and reused on footpaths within the park or given to community projects. Trees collected at the kerbside will be composted along with the food and garden waste.
Household Waste Recycling Centres
Christmas trees along with any other green waste can be taken to Manchester’s three Household Waste Recycling Centres (Longley Lane in Sharston, Reliance Street in Newton Heath or Sandfold Lane in Levenshulme).
All flats across the city will be able to contact Environment On Call to arrange a collection of Christmas trees. All collections will take place on the Wednesday following the request. We are advising that the management companies/building managers arrange a collection point within their complex where residents can take their trees. It is then the management company’s/building manager’s responsibility to contact EOC to arrange to have the trees collected.
