Manchester Day Parade
Sunday 19 June 2011
CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
Would you, your community group, organisation or family like to take part in the second Manchester Day Parade on Sunday 19 June 2011?
This is your chance to be part of an amazing procession that brings colour, music, dance and larger-than-life characters to the streets. A wonderful celebration of fascinating discoveries and events that have shaped the lives of the people of Manchester, created by the people of Manchester 2011.
There will be opportunities to create floats and make costumes, dance and play music and be part of one of the biggest events in town!
This year’s theme is ‘A Voyage of Discovery’ ….here are some ideas to start you thinking.
Discover the stories of the city and bring them to life
Discover the best in your community
Discover the landscape around you
Discover the history of your area
Discover what’s behind your door, and see if there are any skeletons in your family’s cupboard !
Discover the inventors, explorers, scientists, musicians, artists……. in your city

It’s 250 years since the Bridgewater Canal was opened, enabling barges to carry goods around the country…..what voyages of discovery might you make this year?
Discover Sporting Manchester, Musical Manchester, Digital Manchester, Creative and Literary Manchester…..or make your own Voyage of Discovery in 2011.
There are all sorts of ways you can get involved:
A. Groups can work with an artist to develop ideas consistent with the theme. This could be designing a float, creating costumes, making music or choreography.
B. Groups who already have costumes/a float that fit with the theme ‘A Voyage of Discovery’.
C. Groups who play music and can play and walk within the Parade.
D. Individuals, small groups or families who want to take part and are willing to work with other people to create a section of the Parade or make costumes, or want to get involved but don’t know where to start.
E. Individuals or groups who would like to volunteer on the day of the event.
F. Individuals or groups who have ideas for animating areas along the route which the Parade passes with music, performance, structures etc.
We want to encourage as many people as possible across the city to take part in the Parade and will try our best to accommodate those who put themselves forward. However, in the event that applications for participation are oversubscribed (the 2010 Parade stretched for a mile and wouldn’t have worked had it been any longer!), priority will be given to groups and individuals who weren’t involved last time round as well as to those whom the Steering Group feels has put forward the most creative ideas.
Please fill in this form with your ideas and proposals and also indicate how you would like to be involved in the 2011 Manchester Day Parade and return to Billie Klinger, MDP2011, Walk the Plank, 72 Broad Street, Salford M6 5BZ or email to: billie.klinger [at] walktheplank.co.uk
Please note: we would like the Parade to be as GREEN as possible and therefore discourage the use of motorised vehicles as floats or diesel powered generators. We actively embrace all ideas for structures which can be walked, pushed, pulled or wheeled – the wackier the better!
Deadline for applications: 21 January 2011
Taster sessions: Walk the Plank, the creative producers of Manchester Day Parade will be running taster sessions in January 2011. At these sessions we can tell you more about how to take part, what is involved in being part of the Parade, talk through ideas and answer questions – please indicate if you would be interested in attending one of these sessions.
