During 2009 and 2010 we’ve put a lot of effort into brightening up and cleaning up the streets and alleys in Cranswick Square. With grants from Adactus Housing Association and Manchester City Council, we’ve decorated all the homes on Cranswick Street and a number of those on the other streets with hanging baskets full of seasonal flowers. We’ve also built flower boxes to sit next to each of the trees on Cranswick Street, and more of these are planned for Driffield Street, Markington Street, Henbury Street and the other roads on the Square. In summer 2009, members of the Residents Group donated masonry paint (and time!) to repaint all the lower windowsills, steps and lower walls of houses on Henbury Street, Cranswick Street, Markington Street and Driffield Street.
We’ve also cleaned up the alleyways between Broadfield Road and Cranswick Street and between Markington Street and Driffield Street, pruning overhanging shrubs, clearing away accumulated waste, re-setting displaced paving stones, marking rubbish bins with their house numbers and arranging with the city council for unused wheelie bins to be removed. This is an ongoing task which needs all residents and landlords to use and store their bins responsibly, not dump rubbish in the alleys, and report flytippers to Manchester City Council.
